 There's nothing better than an election that is free and fair. The Association of Mass Communication Students (AMCOMS) had quite a number of interesting activities within the last month. After the manifesto hearing on Friday, the 29th of August, she held her departmental elections on Monday the 2nd of August, at the faculty of social science, University of Jos. According to a census generated from the total number of votes, more than 500 students participated in this year's elections. At about 10:30am, after all had been set; ballot boxes and papers provided, makers to mark thumbs of voters, the ELCOMS officials directed that voting could begin.   Students had earlier been asked to form lines according to their levels and the security men present set stones in front of them to demarcate the section not to be crossed.  Going in an order of two persons from each class, names of voters were checked according to class lists and  students were given ballot papers and som...

   Candidates for the other posts were called on stage accordingly. The post of financial secretary had two candidates: Abraham Wuyep and Obadiah Livingstone. Abraham with one of his aims for the department if elected, drew the attention of the house. He stated that he will ‘introduce a POS system for payments of departmental dues and the funds generated will be for the department’. Many questions were asked. Among them was that of who will run the POS and how a POS system can minimise temptation of misappropriation of funds. To answer this, the candidate stated that the POS keeps records of transactions made and receipts of payment will be given to students immediately. Obadiah on the other hand, presented an agenda he called TRAP; Transparency, Records, Accountability, and Proficiency. He emphasised on genuine receipts collection.  “If you feed the people just with revolutionary slogans, they will listen today, they will listen tomorrow, they will listen the day after tomorrow, but on the fourth day they will say, ‘to hell with you" .      As part of the processes for every elections, the Association of Mass Communication Students held a manifesto hearing for her aspirants on Friday, the 30th of July, 2021. Scheduled to begin at 12:00pm, all aspirants and some onlookers were gathered at the venue on time.  The ELCOMS chairman introduced and opened the agenda for the day. Aspirants were asked to distribute printed copies of their manifestos so that all present could follow as they made their presentations.  Beginning by descending order, the first candidate was called; Dawang Emmanuel for the post of the Library Secretary.  Unlike many might have thought, the fun didn't end there. Who could believe anything more could happen? Well, just like an onlooker said, ‘if you no dey FASA where you dey?’. This statement more than anyone could have imagined, held more to it than could have been predicted. It could be said that already present onlookers contacted their friends from the hostels and wherever, to come and be a part of the fun as was, if anyone was truly asked, suspected that ‘they couldn't go and give the gist of what was experienced, as a first-hand experience would beat any other thing’. Excitement could be seen on the faces of all who were present. People never got tired of dancing and the DJ never got tired of blasting the largely favoured music of the ‘very hungry’ crowd. What's better than going to school but not actually going to school? Nothing!     Just like any other institution of higher learning, the ‘Faculty of Arts Students’ of the university of Jos, after long weeks of attending lectures with no fun, organised her annual ‘FASA WEEK’ which is normally done to blow off steam and gather momentum to prepare for exams which would normally begin in short weeks after the program. The FASA executives led by the Director of Socials organised this event which took place from the 5th -11th of July which featured so many engaging extracurricular activities. One which stood out of course, because of it's extra, juicier activities was the RAG DAY which took place in front of the Faculty of Arts building on Friday, the 9th of July. After the announcement by the Secretary General, where the figure squandered by the president and financial secretary was mentioned, the P .R .O reached the president via a phone call as was seen happening life on the stage the executives were seated. The Secretary General in turn announced to the general audience that the president was on his way to the venue.  Before the arrival of the President, the financial secretary made his entrance through the back door, his presence was announced and he was given a seat in front. A significant correspondence by Mrs Oprah, a 300 level student, shook the house. She pointed out a few mistakes on the part of the executives; “a speech should have been made by the chairperson present at the beginning of the meeting after the adoption of the previous minute, informing the house about the issue of the misappropriation of funds by the president and the financial secretary and their exact reasons for not being in attendance”. The acronym AMCOMS stands for Association of Mass Communication Students. This body, just like any other body in an organised environment, stands to represent members of a particular department/association of people.  Today, the 19th of March, 2021, the association, headed by its officials, held a very interesting Congress; the first for the 2019/2020 session. Before today, an announcement was sent to the general platform on WhatsApp and to the various classes. The announcement stated that “all amcomsites are expected to come out, en masse as crucial issues will be discussed”. The key word being ‘crucial’. Wonder why the P.R.O had to stress that. In my interactions with students before the commencement of the Congress today, I gathered that there were indeed crucial issues to be discussed.
