“If you have a matriculation number, you will vote". AMCOMS holds manifesto.

“If you feed the people just with revolutionary slogans, they will listen today, they will listen tomorrow, they will listen the day after tomorrow, but on the fourth day they will say, ‘to hell with you".

As part of the processes for every elections, the Association of Mass Communication Students held a manifesto hearing for her aspirants on Friday, the 30th of July, 2021.

Scheduled to begin at 12:00pm, all aspirants and some onlookers were gathered at the venue on time.

The ELCOMS chairman introduced and opened the agenda for the day. Aspirants were asked to distribute printed copies of their manifestos so that all present could follow as they made their presentations.

Beginning by descending order, the first candidate was called; Dawang Emmanuel for the post of the Library Secretary. He ran through his campaign briefly and they included: making sure the library is well organised, keeping a full record of the activities of the library and his main aim according to him, “convert some material books to PDF to encourage e-learning". He also stated a primary aim which was to assist other members of the executive board.

Next was the candidate for assistant Secretary General, Umahi Emmanuel Prince. To the amazement of the house as this was something new, the aspirant stated his aim to “form a press club of interested students with the assistance of the Secretary General and other executives if elected, which will create news content and stories relatable to both staff and students to encourage students with writing talents".

Ninlang Hamida, candidate for Provost Marshal's main aim could be rounded up to ‘restoration of peace and unity’. She expressed her wish to maintain order during gatherings and create peaceful relationships amongst students of all levels.

Candidate for the post of the Director of Sports, Azitta Benjamin Jerry came on stage wearing a track trouser and a black sports shirt on canvas. This candidate expressed his love for sports in not so many but undiniable ways. Among his aspirations if elected into the position, he stated that he will ‘organise trainings for players and coaches and make sure every sportsman has a benefit attached to his sports participation’. He also expressed his wish for the exploitation of all sports available and the improvement of sporting experiences and introducing more people to sports.

The fifth candidate by descending order; Amos Sunday for the post of Director of Socials had the aim to create lasting relationships if elected. He also caught the attention of many when he stated that he will make buses available to convey students back to their destinations after dinner because of an experience he had when he had to trek home at night after the dinner one year.

Again, he drew the attention of the house with his aim to organise a gospel concert for Christian students and also support Muslim students in whatever activity they plan to engage in.

The post of the Welfare Secretary had two candidates: Generous Dabien and Deborah Philip Gowal. They both shared interesting dreams for the department if elected. Generous during the week, had expressed her desire to keep the departmet's bathroom clean by personally cleaning it and providing brooms and detergent. She also stated that if she is elected, she will ‘go to the appropriate authority to make sure that cleaners are allocated to the bathroom and paid’.

Deborah also gained the crowd’s interest with her desire to reach out to students lacking in one way or the other (sickness, depression, finances) with the help of course representatives and also sourcing for funds for projects like providing refreshment at important gatherings.

Sani Omobunde, candidate for the post of the Public Relations Officer shared his goal to expand social platforms e.g, telegram which will accommodate all students unlike WhatsApp where only half of the association’s students are participants.

His next aim to provide a 24-hour hotline earned him questions like, ‘who will take the calls?’ and also, ‘would someone take calls even at nights?’. The audience was more accepting of his aim to organise online campaigns for the addressing of important issues where physical ones cannot be held.

“There are honest politicians. They haven't won the election yet”.

A Year of Service, A Lifetime of Lessons

Service, friendship, growth They say life is in stages- I agree. But if I hadn’t passed through the challenges that came with NYSC and made it to this point, I’d probably still be in comatose, asking God “Why me?” Before graduation, my friends; Lucy, Kyen, Melody, and I, discussed where we’d love to be posted for service. We’d done the entire four (technically six) years of university together, so it only made sense to plan to do life after school together, or at least close enough. We compared dreams, and they basically aligned. Little did we know. You know, when you’re in a particular stage of life and preparing for its end, the only logical thing to do is to dream of better, to stay optimistic, because faith, among other things, teaches us to believe that there’s always better ahead. Camp was the experience. I’d attended boarding school and even gone to camp as a junior cadet back in secondary school. I remember an endurance trek we went on one morning that nearly rendered my legs i...

Dare to dream- you are more than the figure you see in the mirror.

In one episode of Young Sheldon, Sheldon asked the librarian what her religion was because he was learning about different religions in order to find the one he liked better. She said her religion teaches that when people die they go their own planets but women have to go to their husband's planet, except her because she's single.    In all 23 years of my life, I have battled with people's different beliefs in relation to love, respect and ambitions. It's been a tough and conflicting battle on what to belief as right or not. I have made my own assumptions and research based on what I've been taught intentionally and I believe at this point, I have the right standing.     The argument about God's intention when he took a rib out of man to create woman is one that can put one's brain in a turmoil. Did God mean for a woman to only be a helpmate and not have her own identity? Did he instruct Adam to be fruitful, multiply and subdue the earth by himself?   ...
