“Every election is determined by the people who come out to vote”.
The 2018/2019 AMCOMS election held on the 18th of November, 2019, at the Faculty of Arts main entrance. Scheduled for 10:00 am, the election kick-started with the ELCOM officials readying the points for voting. There were various boxes with tags of the different electoral positions placed side by side; President, treasurer, financial secretary, welfare secretary, Public Relations Officer.
At about 10:10 am, students from various levels were gathered and were directed to form lines to ensure orderliness during exercising their franchise.
Agents of different aspirants wore tags of their candidates, encouraging people to ‘vote wisely’.
“Not voting is not a protest. It is a surrender”.
Surprising but inspiring, the turn-out around the first minutes of voting was massive. It seemed like students this year, were more encouraged by the candidates than with those of previous years. Interviews with students from the 300 and 200 levels, confirmed that ‘a crowd like this has never been seen’.
Lines were forming and lines were decreasing but one cannot say that the lines for voting were ever empty during voting. At some point, it seemed like the last few people were the last for the day, but some new voters admitted that they were drawn from their various classes by friends who had voted.
Candidates were seen around encouraging people to vote them, although they were not allowed around the pooling point. Speaking with some of the candidates, they expressed their anxiety about the results yet to be compiled. Some were very sure of victory while some, on the other hand, submitted completely to God; “seriously, only God will determine. I’ve done my best, I hope He doesn’t fail me”. At exactly 2:00 pm, every form of voting was asked to cease as it was the scheduled expiry time for voting. Students around the pooling point were politely asked to vacate excluding agents of candidates and ELCOM officials. This was done to enable results to be determined through the counting of the votes. This period was the most heated both for the general public and the candidates. It could be said that most of the candidates almost went out of their minds with worry. Concerned publics stayed close to offer encouragement and assurance.
Almost like the wait wouldn’t come to an end, after proper counting and making sure that some voting papers were not hidden anywhere or neglected, the ELCOM officials concluded according to one of them, ‘doing their best to be fair as possible ‘.
Students gathered around again, and without much delay, the results of both the winning and losing team was announced, leaving the public in excited screams and some with tears, frowns and sadness written over their faces.
It was a time of contrasting facial expressions and body language as there were both tears as there was laughter, dance as there were hands on heads.
“Success is not final and failure is not fatal. It is the ability to move on that counts”.
Winners were congratulated and losers encouraged.
All thanks to God, the ELCOM officials, and the general public, the 2018/2019 AMCOMS elections was a success.
